The Arlington Memorial Gardens has a long history of honoring our military members, especially during Memorial Day Weekend. In 2015, our Field of Memories was created; 1000 American Flags erected each year as a stunning tribute to the men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our nation. The Field of Memories event has grown each year, and we were looking forward to the many events planned at Arlington for Memorial Day Weekend to Honor, Remember and Celebrate these heroes. But the Coronavirus Pandemic had different plans for our nation.
While the Commemorate & Celebrate event on Friday evening is cancelled, as well as our Annual Lunch with a Veteran and Flag Raising Ceremony on Sunday due to mandates and guidelines from the CDC and Health Department – Memorial Day is not cancelled, nor is Arlington’s commitment to honoring these men and women.
We will still erect the 1000 American Flags that create The Field of Memories, albeit a bit different from years past. There will not be the individual flag tributes with names tagged on each flag, but instead we will create one large visual tribute. Beginning Friday, May 22nd thru Monday, May 25th we invite you and your family to drive through the grounds of Arlington and view The Field of Memories flag tribute from your car so that you can reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.
The National Moment of Remembrance – an annual event that asks Americans, wherever they are at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day to pause for a duration of one minute to remember those who have died in military service to the United States – will still be observed at Arlington. We will be holding a Moment of Remembrance each day at 3:00 pm beginning on Friday, May 22nd followed by the playing of Taps on our Carillons. We hope if you are on the grounds of Arlington visiting a loved one during this time, you will join us in these Moments of Remembrance.
The gates on Compton Road will be open for visitation from 8 AM – 8 PM daily and staff will be on the grounds and throughout the gardens to assist visitors each day until 4 PM on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
We look forward to providing an enhanced Memorial Day experience for our families and community in 2021. Thank you for your continued support.
