Donald F. Ellis
Donald F. Ellis (90), formerly of Hartwell, Springfield Township and Mason, Ohio, passed away suddenly on May 4th. Don was the husband of Edna Lea (Eppinghoff), for what would have been 70 years on May 6th. He was the son of the late Sylvester “Lester” and late Mildred Ellis, brother of the late William (Lois) Ellis, father of Kathi Ellis, Barbara Oches (deceased) and John (Patty) Ellis. He leaves behind grandchildren Megan, Amanda and Lauren Ellis, Matthew (Tammy) Oches and Erin Oches and great-grandson Hayden Oches.
Don worked for Procter & Gamble for 38 years in the Toilet Goods division in St. Bernard. He started as a draftsman and went to UC at night for many years and worked his way up to a Mechanical Equipment Manager. He often said he saw the building he worked in being built in 1950 and then saw it torn down in 1988 when he retired. Don enjoyed many sports and played on the company softball and bowling teams and enjoyed the comraderie that was developed with fellow employees who became life-long friends. Don and Edna were members of the Sycamore Presbyterian Church.
Don was an outstanding athlete playing quarterback for Hartwell High School and might have enjoyed a college career as well had the GI bill not interfered with his ability to get a scholarship to UC. He was an avid golfer and played into his late 80’s, often scoring lower than his age. He married his high school sweetheart in 1950 at the age of 20 and had to get his mother’s permission because he was not yet 21. Don enjoyed the outdoors and particularly, hunting. He would go on an annual pheasant hunting trip to Lake Andes, South Dakota and then have a pheasant fry with many who joined him along with other friends. He was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. We will miss his sense of humor, sociable personality, strong will and kind heart. He will be deeply missed.
