Arlington’s Teddy Receives National Recognition

A family arrives at our office, facing difficult conversations. Yet some of Arlington’s most meaningful moments begin without a word. Because Teddy is there to greet them, he’s sometimes a familiar face, a welcome surprise to others.

Teddy has served as Arlington’s grief-comfort dog for the past seven years. Recently featured in American Funeral Director magazine, Teddy has become a favorite on the Arlington team and an important presence for the families we serve.

The magazine feature, contributed by Family Care Advisor Lauren Christakos (Teddy’s human), describes how Teddy participates in daily life here. He is a greeter extraordinaire and accompanies families to both advance-planning and at-need arrangement conferences. He also attends funerals when requested. His friendly personality helps create a welcoming environment during often emotional and difficult conversations.

But Teddy has his own unique story. A newborn puppy accident cost him most of one ear. Here at Arlington, we lovingly refer to it as his “wonky” ear. Today, his distinctive appearance is simply part of the dog so many Arlington families have come to know and love.

He is also quite the local personality. He has his own business card and social media following, and Arlington’s website lists him as an employee. Families often look forward to seeing him when they return, and others specifically request his presence during their arrangements or services.

Those requests say it all. In a recent review, a family praised Arlington’s staff for their compassion and offered a special thank-you to Teddy, noting that his excitement at seeing them brought smiles and a sense of comfort. Amid a difficult day, Teddy made an impression.

His role at Arlington is simple yet crucial: to offer companionship and help people feel a little more at ease. Teddy can give someone a moment to pause during a demanding conversation, an opportunity to smile, or the comfort of a friendly presence when words are too hard to find.

We are pleased that Teddy was recognized in American Funeral Director. For those of us who work alongside him, his value has long been evident. At Arlington, where memories are held, care can take many forms. Sometimes, it simply arrives on four paws.
