If you’ve visited the area around or near the new Plaza at Meditation Point and the Jo Ann Brooks Memorial Gazebo, you couldn’t have helped but notice the unsightly work underway along the South Cove of Arlington Lake.

Stormwater runoff from much of Arlington’s grounds naturally drains into the cove, and several feet of sediment have accumulated on the bottom over many years. That sediment buildup reduced the water depth and created conditions that encouraged the unsightly growth of algae and other vegetation.

AMG South Cove Construction

Restoring the cove without disturbing the wildlife is a substantial dredging project. Grounds Superintendent Jim Philpot bravely took on the project “in-house” using Arlington’s team and equipment. Although progress has been steady, the work’s scope and complexity have pushed the project beyond the original timeline. We appreciate the patience of families and visitors while this important work continues.

We are confident the finished result will be well worth the wait. When completed, the South Cove will feature cleaner and healthier water for the wildlife, new fountains, and a new Memorial Walkway that will further enhance the Plaza at Meditation Point and the Brooks Gazebo.

The project represents another important investment in the long-term beauty and care of Arlington and another area of remembrance that families and future generations can continue to enjoy.
