Many years ago, I tried to explain sunrise to my young daughter. “There is a quiet moment,” I told her, “just before sunrise, when the world seems to wait.”

The air is still, and the light has not fully formed. Even sound feels softened, awaiting something just beyond view.

Those are typical sunrises. On Easter morning, that moment carries a different kind of weight.

It’s the hour when darkness begins to retreat, not all at once, but gradually, almost imperceptibly. Yet, within that restrained illumination, something distinctive happens. Light returns. Shapes come into focus. What felt distant just moments ago begins to feel near again.

For centuries, people have gathered at this hour, not out of obligation, but out of recognition. Standing at the edge of a new day, together, invites reflection. Not only on loss but also on what endures beyond it.

At Arlington, that gathering has taken place for more than sixty years.

Our Sunrise Service has shifted across the grounds over the years, adapting to changing seasons and circumstances. But its purpose has always remained the same. To pause. To remember. And to witness, together, the quietly persistent return of light.

This Easter, we hope you’ll join us for Arlington’s 67th Annual Sunrise Service.

The service will start at 7:00 AM on Easter Sunday, April 5, at the Arlington Funeral Home parking area. You are welcome to gather outside to experience the quiet of the morning or, if it’s more comfortable, stay in your vehicle and listen to the live radio broadcast.

There is no requirement and no expectation. This is simply an opportunity to be present at a meaningful hour, in the company of others, as a new day begins.

Whether you come with memories close to your heart or just a desire to experience something quiet and grounding, you are welcome at our service.

Something changes at sunrise. Not all at once. And not always in ways that are easily noticed. But it does change.

Sometimes, it helps to witness that change together.
