Obituary via Littleton & Rue Funeral Home

DONALD “DR. MAC” MCSURDY, 94, formerly of Springfield, passed away on October 7, 2024, in Hilliard, Ohio. He was born August 10, 1930, in Williamstown, Pennsylvania to his parents Daniel and Arletta (Collier) McSurdy.

Donald was affectionately known for most of his life as “Dr. Mac” from his long-term career as an anesthesiologist, first for 17 years at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati Ohio then another 17 years at Community Hospital in Springfield Ohio. Dr. Mac made many friends and long-lasting impressions on the uncounted patients he cared for. He had a special love for pediatric patients and newborn deliveries. But it was the hospital staff, volunteers and fellow doctors and nurse anesthetists that motivated him to give his best every day with a smile. In his time off, and during his well-earned retirement, Don loved traveling with his wife Elaine in their motor home, named the “bus house” by their grandkids who came to visit when they camped out locally in the summers after retirement. Throughout his life, football was a constant love. Don had attended college at Lebanon Valley near Lancaster PA, University of Cincinnati for medical school but it was his time at Penn State University that made him a true blue (and white) Nittany Lions football enthusiast, and he never missed a game. He was a kind and adventurous spirit who never met a stranger, and he will be missed by those who were fortunate to know him.

Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years Elaine, children Deborah Garza, Craig (Danielle) McSurdy, Tim Spreen, Lisa (Chris) Connelly, and Jeffery Spreen; grandchildren Heidi (Gabe) Hall, Heather (Andrew) Wathen, Brenna McSurdy, Ian McSurdy, Aimee (Paul) Baker, Cameron Connelly, and Peter Connelly; great-grandchildren Lane, Joey, and Cameron Hall, and Carter and Elijah Wathen. Donald is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Connie and son Bruce (Melanie) McSurdy.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 20 from 2:00 – 3:30 pm at Littleton & Rue Funeral Home in Springfield, Ohio with the funeral service beginning at 3:30 pm. A private interment will take place at Arlington Memorial Gardens in Cincinnati.
