It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Lee Tomes, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who departed this life on September 4, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on November 18, 1945, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Donald led a life marked by both dedication and passion.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Donald served his country honorably during the Vietnam War from 1965 until 1967. His courageous service earned him two Purple Heart awards, a testament to his bravery and commitment to protecting the freedoms we hold dear.

Those who knew Donald will remember him for his many interests and talents. An avid sports enthusiast, he found joy in watching Ohio State football games, as well as cheering for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cincinnati Reds. He was a brilliant card player, with Texas Hold ‘Em being a favorite of his. Donald also loved listening to Elvis Presley, and he made lasting memories traveling to Las Vegas with his wife, Gale, where they enjoyed the renewal of their union (twice!).

He was predeceased by his parents, Jasper and Amelia Tomes (nee Klinglehoffer); his son, David Wellman; and his granddaughter, Jessie Wellman.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gale Tomes; his children, Jalain Tomes, Randy (Kathy) Tomes, Lee Tomes, Craig Wellman, and Eric Wellman; his grandchildren, Donald Lee Tomes II, Mikayla Oldham, Damin Tomes, Dalton Tomes, Mileigha Tomes, Alex Hermann, Savannah Wellman, Hayden Wellman, Ava Wellman, Madison Tomes, Michael Tomes, and Mason Tomes; as well as 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

A visitation for Donald will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Spring Grove Funeral Homes – Northwest Chapel, 7830 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231, beginning at 9:00 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 10:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Arlington Memorial Gardens, 2145 Compton Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231.

In this time of sorrow, let us celebrate the life of Donald Lee Tomes, a man whose legacy will live on in our hearts and memories. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love he brought to all who knew him.
