Dr. Barbara Jean Lewis

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Dr. Barbara Jean Lewis, 89, of Wyoming, Ohio, on June 13, 2024. Born on January 9, 1935 in Beattyville, Kentucky, she moved to Cincinnati and married Glenn on October, 31 1961. She graduated as valedictorian from Xavier University in 1978 and went on to earn her doctorate in Economics at the University of Cincinnati. She was a respected professor and the first woman Chair of the Finance Department at Miami University, where she taught for many years. She retired from Miami University in 1999.

In addition to spending time with her grandchildren, especially on weekly “Grandma Days”, she could be found traveling with family to the Rocky Mountains, where Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons were her favorite destinations. She was also very active with the Presbyterian Church of Wyoming for many years.

Barbara will be dearly missed by her husband of 63 years, Glenn Lewis, and her sons, James Lewis, David (Tracy) Lewis, grandchildren Erin (Kyle) Petty, Adam Lewis, Katie Lewis, Jenny Lewis, great-granddaughter, Clara Petty, and siblings Daniel Joe Mitchell, Gail Center, as well as many extended relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her son Donald Lewis, parents Chester and Amy Mitchell, and sisters, Sue Bull and Joyce Brewer.

“Thanks so much for putting this on here. Jean is my 1st cousin. Her mother Amy Tirey Mitchell was a sister to my Dad James Edward Tirey. He passed away in 1955. Jean and Gail and Sue and Joe used to come to our cousins reunion at Natural Bridge. My sister Anita grew up with Jean and her siblings. Gail let me know she has passed away. Anita and I and my son Jason Tirey and my nephew James Berryman are so sorry for your loss. Jean was a great person. She will be missed.”

“Barbara was clearly a remarkable woman. We are so sorry for your loss.”

“We hope you find comfort in knowing that Barbara is finally out of her pain and no longer living with the frustration that she couldn’t manage all of the many roles she played over the 30+ years we’ve known her. She rose up in life and loved it to the fullest, on her terms. My prayers are especially with Glen as his life seemed to revolve around Barbara.”
