Obituary via Neidhard Young Funeral Home

Eugene (Gene) Girden Mugrage, 92, Mt. Healthy, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home August 26, 2022 surrounded by his family.  He was a modern son of the original pioneers of Columbus, Ohio, and retained their curiosity and investigative spirit throughout his life. Gene was born Feb 2, 1930, to his father Girden F. Mugrage and mother Mildred R. Mugrage (Rickenbacher).  He told many humorous stories of “the way things were” back then.  He graduated high school from Greenbriar Military School (1948) in West Virginia. After graduating from Ohio State, he proudly served in the Army, finishing his enlistment at Eielson AFB in Alaska.  He studied at Miami University where he met his future wife, Mary Diane Mugrage (Ferguson).  After marrying, they spent 2 years traveling with an oil exploration company and lived in many tiny towns in the west (where they discovered Bar-B-Que) but finally settled in Mt. Healthy to raise their children, Eugene II (Mary), Randal (Dawn), Monte (Jennifer) and Abigail. He received a M. ED from College of St. Thomas, MN,  and retired from Western Hills HS after 31 years of teaching science there, and at Dater and Heinold Jr Highs.

He was an Assistant Scoutmaster for many years. At Cub Scout Camp Friedlander he was Camp Director in the beginning years.  He was a member of Winton Place Veterans and helped establish the Covenant Community Church on Struble Rd, with his “Mr. Fixit” talents.

He spent his later years in life, tending his yard, working puzzles, listening to classical music and jazz and enjoying time with family and friends.

Gene joins his father, mother, and sister Thelma Lou in Heaven. He is survived by his wife, sister June, children and grandchildren-Joshua (Christiane), Matthew, Timothy (Rheann), Kara, Sarah (Hari), Samuel, Benjamin, Daniel, John Michael, and Andrew and step-grandchildren John and Jeremy and 5 great-grandchildren, of whom he was very proud, as well as beloved nephews and nieces.

A Military graveside service will be held November 23, 2022 at 11:30am at Arlington with Pastor Rich Lanning officiating.

Gene was a faithful man, and he was a very funny man!
