Neidhard Young Funeral Home is assisting the Family

Obituary via Neidhard Young Funeral Home

Gus was received by the Lord and reunited with the love of his life, Vera, on the evening of Father’s Day, June 18, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Axel and Frieda Gustafson, his sister, Alma (Bill) Brossenne and his great-grandson, Graydon Koch. Gus is survived by his daughters, Susan (Bill) Koch and Janet (Bruce) Boyd as well as his grandchildren: Andy (Olivia) Koch, Joshua (Meredith) Koch, Ian (Megan) Boyd and Allison (Cameron) Hulse. Gus was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren; Caroline, Sylvie and Oliver Koch, Graham and Grace Koch and Lucas and Liam Boyd. Gus is also survived by a large extended family of nephews, nieces, friends, former employees of Assured Micro Services and his best friend in recent years, John Purkiss.

Gus was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Cincinnati Reds and University of Cincinnati Bearcats. As a young man, he enjoyed playing baseball on several teams as a pitcher. Gus was also a lover of music and was quite a talented singer/soloist in his church choir, as well as the winner of a city wide amateur talent competition in Cincinnati.

Gus and Vera were 60 year members of the College Hill Presbyterian Church, where they participated in bible studies and supported the Youth Camping Ministry. He was a wonderful witness to the love of Christ.

Gus was a born salesman, ultimately starting his own micrographics sales and service company, Assured Micro Services in 1974 with his wife, Vera. The business prospered over the years and at it’s peak, employed nearly 100 people, all of whom Gus and Vera regarded as extended family members.

Gus’ greatest passions, above all else though, was fishing. He was never happier than when he had a rod and reel in his hands, flogging the water with unbridled enthusiasm and with lures of every imaginable kind. The tales of his fishing exloits are legandary and could fill several weighty volumes. He even caught a seagull once (it was released unharmed).

Gus was truly a gentle and kind soul with an outstanding sense of self deprecating humor. He was fiercely loyal to his family and friends and never judgmental. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

Burial at Arlington Memorial Gardens will be private for the family.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at College Hill Presbyterian Church, 5742 Hamilton Avenue at Groesbeck Road, Thursday June 22, 2023 at 12 Noon. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to College Hill Presbyterian Church.
