Hubert Thomas

It is with heavy hearts and joyful memories that we celebrate the life of Hubert Thomas, who peacefully departed from this world on September 3, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on February 9, 1938, in Atlanta, GA, Hubert made his mark on the world and the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter.

Known fondly as “Bubbles” by his classmates, Hubert graduated from Madeira High School in 1956, where he not only excelled in academics but also shined on the basketball and football fields. The joy he spread was reflected in his high school yearbook, where it was noted that his friendly smile could be seen in the most unexpected places. Hubert had a natural gift for making those around him feel special, and his beautiful tenor voice could often be heard during choir rehearsals, ringing out clear as a bell. The Class of 1956 fondly remembers him as a true buddy, always ready to lend a helping hand.

A proud veteran of the Army, Hubert was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was also a dedicated machine operator at Ford Motor Company, where he played on the company’s baseball team, showcasing his love for sports and teamwork. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, crossword puzzles and he possessed a green thumb when it came to gardening, especially with flowers.

Those who knew Hubert will always remember his kindness and caring nature. They described him as a genuinely nice guy who always had a smile, kind word and nothing bad to say about anyone. He had a great sense of humor and a great laugh. He was devoted to his family and loved with all his heart. Hubert was a loving father to his daughter, Neresa (Samuel) Giles, a beloved brother to Curtis Thomas, and a cherished grandparent to Tyana Giles, Jacob, Sean and Sam as well as a cherished uncle to a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also played a positive part in the lives of other children, one of which gave him a nickname when she couldn’t pronounce his name that stuck, “Skippert.” Hubert also had a particular fondness for his grand dogs, Onyx and Daisy, who brought him endless joy.

As we gather to honor Hubert’s remarkable life, we invite family and friends to join us in a series of events that will celebrate his spirit. We will hold a visitation on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 9:30 AM, followed by a funeral service from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Arlington Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the Garden of Patriotism.

Let us remember Hubert Thomas not with sadness, but with laughter and celebration—just as he would have wanted.

Hubert was preceded in death by his mother, Cecelia Thomas and his siblings, Mozell Thomas, Rubie Thomas and Jimmy Thomas.
