Patrick Dale Dugan

It is with both heavy hearts and joyous memories that we celebrate the life of Patrick Dale Dugan, who passed away on January 28, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on September 29, 1939, in Glen Rogers, West Virginia, Pat was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend whose vibrant spirit touched the lives of many.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes Dugan (nee Sundin), his wife, Donna Jean Dugan (nee Richardson), his brothers Eugene “Bud” Dugan and Richard “Dick” Dugan, and his son-in-law Rod Burkhardt.

Pat grew up in Belle, West Virginia, where he often spent time in the woods up on the mountain playing and talking to God. He fondly remembered traveling by train to visit his grandmother in Mullins, West Virginia, during the summer and returning home just in time for school. He attended Dupont High School, where he participated in the marching band as a tuba player with his favorite subjects being history and science and ironically, he ended up being a math teacher. He graduated in 1957.

Pat, a Navy veteran and proud radarman, served on the USS Tracer (AGR-15) – formerly the USS Interrupter. He loved serving his country and often reminisced about his time in the military. It was in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1958 that he met the love of his life, Donna Jean. Together, they embarked on a journey filled with laughter, adventure, and a family that grew to cherish Pat’s warm heart and infectious enthusiasm for life.

Pat earned his master’s degree in education from Miami University. A true educator at heart, Pat spent many fulfilling years teaching in the Greenhills/Forest Park School District. He not only shaped young minds but also made a lasting impact as a basketball coach, proving to be a positive role model for countless students.

Beyond the classroom, Pat was a man of many passions. He effortlessly balanced his love for outdoors – fishing, hunting, walking, and hiking. His favorite hunting trip was with his grandson, Ben, where he was able to witness Ben shooting his first pheasant. Pat loved animals and owned many Brittany Spaniels who were his hunting buddies through the years. Pat was an active member of the National Rifle Association and the Bass Anglers Sportsmen Society, dedicating his time to ensure future generations could enjoy the sports he loved.

He had a keen interest in sports, with his favorites being Duke basketball, Ohio State football and the University of Oklahoma women’s fast pitch softball, and he never missed watching the Little League World Series. He has fond memories of his trip to Pittsburgh with his granddaughter, Lauren and daughter, Kim, attending the ACC women’s softball championship tournament. He coached his daughter Renee’s softball teams during her childhood and served as a Girl Scout Leader with Donna for his daughter’s troops. He was often found cheering for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they engaged in various sports, always with pride gleaming in his eyes.

Pat enjoyed many vacations to Civil and Revolutionary War battlefields, historical sites in Virginia and fondly remembers his trip with Donna and their grandchildren, Ben and Lauren, to Lake Michigan. He cherished his memories of many trips with his daughters, often taking day trips with them, most recently to Sunset Ridge Lavender Farm and Brandeberry Winery last summer. He loved spending his Monday nights with his friends at Margarita Mondays where he never drank a margarita.

A lover of life’s simple pleasures, Pat enjoyed good food and cooking. He was known for his holiday cheeseball, black bean and corn salsa and pumpkin chiffon pie. He found joy in sharing laughter and West Virginia hot dogs with family and friends during his annual Fourth of July celebration. He enjoyed attending local Farmer’s Markets where he helped his daughter, Kim, as a vendor and met many wonderful friends. Pat enjoyed serving on the board for Hunter’s Stand Homeowner’s Association, and held the position of president for many years. His cat Max provided him with companionship following the passing of his wife.

We invite all who knew and loved Pat to join us in celebrating his remarkable life. The services will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Four Corners Church, 7740 Service Center Drive, West Chester, OH 45069. Visitation 11:30 AM. Service 12:30 PM with burial to follow at Arlington Memorial Gardens, 2145 Compton Road, 45231 in the Garden of Trinity. Let us gather to share our stories, reflect on the memories we hold dear, and honor a life well-lived, as we say our final goodbyes.

Pat will be laid to rest, but his spirit will forever be felt in the hearts of his daughters, Kim Dugan and Renee Burkhardt; his grandchildren, Ben (Sam) Timpe and Lauren (Tyler) Hance;  great-grandchildren,  Brayden, Jack,  Emmett, and Ellie; and his brother, Tom (Linda) Dugan, his brother-in-law John Richardson, his sister-in-law Minerva Richardson, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Let us celebrate a man who was dedicated to his family and a friend to many—a life that will be missed but never forgotten.

Pat was a lover of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and requested that it be played at his funeral while being escorted from the service.

Flowers can be ordered and sent through Osterbrock Florist, www.osterbrockflorist.com.
