A DEATH
HAS OCCURRED
Shirlie Briggs, a resident of Cincinnati for 75 years, passed away at the Alois Alzheimer’s Center in the late evening of October 8th following a lengthy decline after surgery for a broken hip and joint.
She is survived by her husband John and her brother Kipp and pre-deceased by her father, her mother, and her second mother by adoption. She was a graduate of Wheaton College in Chicago (Biblical Archaeology) and spent two years in Mexico as a biblical translator’s assistant. On her return, she worked as a secretary for only a short time before being “drafted” into Gibson Greeting Card’s start-up IT department in 1976. She remained in the computer field at Gibson Greetings and then at Great American Insurance until her retirement in 2011.
As with all of her family, Shirlie was exceptionally intelligent. She was an outstanding analyst in her field, but she also had published fiction and was a State of Ohio certified naturalist. She was extremely well-read. Her hobbies were photography and painting but she was also an avid tennis player (2nd place twice in a Cincinnati Mixed doubles tournament with her husband). She created databases for the Hamilton County parks for both birds and butterflies and built a database used by homeless veterans’ project in Cincinnati.
She loved the mountains and anything to do with nature. memorial gifts may be made to plant trees at https://thetreesremember.com/ or https://shop.arborday.org/trees-in-memory since she loved trees.

“Shirlie and I worked together at Gibson Greetings. She was exceptionally intelligent. In fact, she was the most intelligent American friend I ever met. We had disagreement on jobs sometimes but remained close and became good friend long after our Gibson days. The last time I saw Shirlie was at Chicago. We spent a whole day enjoying the beautiful Michigan lake front. She also came to see my Chicago garden. We both like gardening and painting. Always enjoy sharing thoughts with each other. A true friend I will miss forever. Rest in Peace, Shirlie.”

“I worked with Shirlie at Gibson Greeting. I started at Gibson in 1969 and worked there until 1995. I was a programmer with Shirlie. We were very good friends. We lost contact with each other after I was laid off from Gibson. She was a very good person.”
