Revitalizing Arlington Lake and its Southern Cove
September 4, 2024
While the Landing at Meditation Point and the Brooks Memorial Gazebo have been completed, additional work remains in the surrounding areas, particularly around Arlington Lake and its southern cove. Over time, silt accumulation in the cove has made the water level progressively shallower, leading to significant algae overgrowth.
The Benefits of Dredging
Dredging is the process of removing sediment and debris from the bottom of a lake. It is a common practice used worldwide to maintain the health and functionality of waterways. The benefits of dredging include:
- Improved Water Quality: Dredging enhances water clarity by removing nutrient-laden sediments, which can contribute to algae blooms.
- Balanced Ecosystem: Dredging helps create a balanced ecosystem for aquatic plants and wildlife by removing excess sediment and debris.
- Restored Stormwater Detention Capacity: Dredging restores the lake’s ability to detain stormwater, which is crucial for managing water levels and preventing flooding.
- Debris and Invasive Plant Eradication: Dredging eliminates debris and deep-rooted invasive plants, improving the lake’s overall health.
Indicators that a lake may need dredging include excessive algae growth and noticeable sediment buildup.
Timeline For the Revitalization Process
Currently, we are in the process of lowering the lake water level. Once this is complete, we will construct a berm to block off the southern cove and begin the dredging process. This work is expected to take several weeks, and it may take several months for the water level to return to normal. During that time, please bear with us as we work through the process of revitalizing Arlington Lake.
