A DEATH
HAS OCCURRED
It is with heavy hearts, yet with joyful memories, that we announce the passing of Douglas William Gaines, who left us on August 13, 2026, at the age of 73. Born January 1, 1953, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Doug was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, music educator, musician, and friend whose life touched countless people and whose legacy will continue through the generations he inspired.
Doug’s passion for music was much more than a profession—it was a lifelong calling. A proud graduate of the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, he dedicated approximately 40 years of his life to music education and performance. Thirty of those years were spent directing and teaching concert and marching band, including long and meaningful careers at Colerain High School and Wyoming High School. After retiring and moving to Florida, Doug continued sharing his gift for music by teaching elementary and middle school students for 10 years and conducting at Lincoln Middle School in Manatee County.
Music was woven into nearly every part of Doug’s life. He served as organist and choir director at Hartwell United Methodist Church from 1983 to 1996, followed by his time as Music Director at Wellspring Community Church from 1997 to 2003. After moving to Florida, Doug continued sharing his love and talent for music as Music Director at several United Methodist Churches from 2006 to 2015. Throughout those years, he built lasting friendships and relationships through his music ministry, and he was especially grateful to have his children join him in serving alongside him.
Doug’s primary instruments were the oboe and piano, with piano being his lifelong main instrument. But his musical abilities went far beyond those two. He had a remarkable ability to pick up nearly any keyboard, woodwind, or brass instrument and find his way around it. His greatest musical accomplishment, however, may have been the love of music he passed on to his family. His children, David, Elizabeth, and Michael, and his grandchildren, Parker, Lincoln, Jack, and Maya, all share his musical inclination—a beautiful harmony that will carry a part of Doug forward for generations to come.
Doug was also a generous and caring man who would go far out of his way to help someone in need. He had a genuine heart for people and formed meaningful relationships wherever life took him.
Outside of music, Doug found great joy working on automobiles alongside his father, creating memories that he treasured throughout his life. He later shared that passion with his son when they started a small car dealership together in 1999. Though the business eventually closed, the laughter, lessons, and time spent side by side remained far more valuable than the business itself. For Doug, moments like these—especially during difficult times, including the days following September 11, 2001—were reminders of just how important family truly was.
And at the center of Doug’s family life was his beloved wife, Marsha.
Doug and Marsha first met at band camp in 1970, beginning a love story that would span more than five decades. Their 51-year marriage was filled with love, family, music, laughter, and adventure. Together they traveled to places including Colorado, Mount Rushmore and South Dakota, Florida, and even enjoyed a family cruise to Hawaii. Through all of life’s seasons, Marsha was Doug’s partner, best friend, and the person with whom he built the life he cherished most.
Doug’s warm heart, generous spirit, sense of humor, and love for music and family will be deeply missed by all who knew him. While his absence leaves an empty place in the lives of his family and friends, the music he taught, the relationships he built, and the love he gave will continue to resonate.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, William and Margaret Gaines (née Busam).
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marsha; his children, David and his wife, Beth; Elizabeth; and Michael and his wife, Tara; and his grandchildren, Parker, Lincoln, Jack, and Maya, along with countless former students, friends, colleagues, and loved ones whose lives he touched.
Though Doug has left this world, the harmony he created through his music and the love he shared with his family will continue to live on. His life was a gift to those who knew him, and his memory will remain in every song played, every student inspired, and every family gathering where his presence is still felt.
May his memory always be a beautiful part of the music of our lives.

“Mr. Gaines was an integral part of my high school experience as he provided the incredible orchestra for all the musicals we did. He was a lovely man and was always kind to me. Every kid who was lucky enough to have him as their teacher should be very grateful for the incredible education they received. I wish I could be there for the service, but I’m caring for my 98 yr. old mother at present. I am sending all my love and condolences to his family. Well done, Mr. G. and rest easy & give my love to our dear Rich Williams while you’re up there. I’m sure the two of you will keep it jazzy!”
