Dr. John Franklin Wilhite

November 6, 1947 – August 30, 2023

Dr. John Franklin Wilhite

Dr. John Franklin Wilhite, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully with his devoted wife of 26 years at his side on August 30, 2023 at the age of 75.

Born on November 6, 1947 in McMinnville, Tennessee as one of four boys, John showed his aptitude for learning from a young age. This passion continued throughout his life as he pursued and achieved a doctorate in Spanish at the age of 26. He went on to study Spanish language and literature, even traveling to and living in Bogota, Columbia for extended study before proudly serving his country in the Army from May 25, 1971 to February 26, 1973.

He leaves a legacy as an esteemed professor of Spanish language, Latin American literature, and Hispanic culture, having established the respected journal Cincinnati Romance Review at the University of Cincinnati in 1981 and coordinating the Cincinnati Conference on Romance Languages and Literature, both of which are still operating over 40 years later.

In addition to education and learning, John loved spending time outdoors in his gardens, woodworking, and doing research for his dozens of publications. Above all, he was most devoted to his family. With them, he shared his love of languages, music, literature, and history. It was not unusual to hear the songs of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and CCR sounding loudly from his office and he never failed to excitedly share his wisdom and knowledge with those around him.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Kimberlyn and their daughter, Jessica Fields and her husband Zane; daughter Valerie; son David; along with numerous relatives and friends.

We gather together to honor his remarkable life on September 16, 2023 at The Arlington Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 2155 Compton Road, 45231. Once on the grounds of the memorial park, follow the BLUE line to the funeral home. Friends and loved ones are invited to the Visitation at 10:00 am. The Graveside Service will be held at Arlington Memorial Gardens at 12:00 pm. The family would like to express our thanks for all the love and support we have received during this difficult time.
