Obituary via Hodapp Funeral Home

Gail Louise Scherz (nee Arnold) passed peacefully to join her heavenly Father on January 1, 2023.  She was the beloved wife for 48 years of the late Richard A. Scherz. Loving mother to Angela Andsager (Greg), Justine Patton (Bryan) and Rick Scherz (Pat). Cherished and ADORED “Mimi” to Annaliese, Adaliene and Andrew Andsager; Emerson and Everett Patton. Loving sister to Jerry (Mona), Steve (Margie), Jim, brother-in-law Tom Scherz (Debbie), and dear aunt to nieces and nephews.

Born April 21, 1937 to Joseph and June Arnold. She grew up in Mt. Healthy, attended Assumption School, Mother of Mercy High School, and Xavier University Night School.

In April of 1958, she married Richard, they soon moved to College Hill where she lived for 62 years.  Gail was dedicated to St. Clare Parish and active in the community.  She was a Sunday School Coordinator, school volunteer and a lay minister.  Gail created the College Hill 4th of July Parade Starting in 1964. It evolved over the next 30 years to include hundreds of neighbors, friends and family. The children would dress in red-white and blue, decorate their bikes, blow whistles, and wear handmade hats and buttons to match a “yearly theme”. Among the themes were: a celebration of the Bicentennial, the Flying Pig, Lady Liberty, and even the German Scherz-n-Fest!  The parade started at Wittekind Terrace and traveled through the streets of College Hill to concluded at the Scherz backyard for hot dogs and beverages!  Gail and Richard treasured their friends and were grateful for all their help with the parade. These were some of their fondest memories.

Gail started her career at the Cincinnati Enquirer. Upon starting a family, she was a homemaker until she returned to work as a business shopper at Shillito’s for more than a decade.  Later she owned a bridal gown business, and moved on to open The Stork Company in Oakley Square.

Gail’s most treasured title was that of “Mimi” to her ADORING grandchildren and “Grandma Gail” to her neighbor Maria.  They loved sleepovers with Mimi; especially the fancy tea parties and pirate sword fights! She cherished each of them and made every occasion memorable and every experience fun. Her long and full life was filled with lots of laughter, wonderful memories and above all lots of love.  Gail’s legacy of charisma and creativity will live on within those she inspired and touched throughout her life!

Visitation will be at St. Clare Church, 1443 Cedar Ave., College Hill on Saturday, January 14, from 10 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am.  Gail’s family invites you to celebrate with them, immediately following mass at a reception in her honor in the church undercroft.  Condolences at Hodapp Funeral Home.
