Obituary via Newcomer Funeral Home

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of George Alexander Chernay, age 100, of Cincinnati, Ohio, who departed this life on January 17, 2026. Born on September 2, 1925, in Lithuania to Alexey and Tatania Chernay, George lived a remarkable life filled with resilience and love.

George was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Ann Louise Chernay, as well as his father, Alexey Chernay, mother, Tatania Chernay, and his cherished wife, Edna Grace Chernay. He is lovingly survived by his son, Jack Chernay; his grandchildren, David, Josh, and Holly (Jacob) Mudd; and his great-grandchildren, Alexandria, JaeLynn, Joshua, and Sasha Chernay, along with Gracie Mudd. He is also survived by his brother, Serge Chernay, and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

An accomplished artist and carpenter, George was a devoted Christian with a deep love for his faith, often found reading his Bible. His journey from Lithuania to the United States, which he undertook on foot, reflects his determination and strength of spirit. A man who cherished family above all, he had a wonderful sense of humor and was an integral part of the deaf community. He was passionate about fishing and had a particular fondness for vanilla ice cream.

George’s dedication to his family was exemplified by his 73 years of devotion to his wife, Edna. His contributions to the community were recognized when he received a certificate of commendation from the mayor and painted murals inside Westwood Elementary School.

A funeral ceremony to honor George’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 23, 2026, with visitation one hour prior, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, at Friendship Baptist Church, located at 8580 Cheviot Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45251. Friends and family are invited to share memories of George and leave special messages for his family in the guestbook provided. George will be greatly missed, but his spirit and legacy will forever remain in our hearts.
