VATH, Helen B. (Nee Strait) Beloved wife of the late William E. Vath. Loving mother of Ginny (Paul) Hill, Bill (Beverly) Vath, Connie (Bernie) Hinkle and Bruce Vath (JoAnn Beck). Devoted grandmother of Rachel (Don) Weintz, Amanda (Matt) Keechle, Ryan (Katie) Hill, Kyle (Melissa) Vath, Daniel Vath, Chad (Brittany) Hinkle, Josh (Cassidy) Hinkle, Lindsay (Neil) Wilson, Melissa (Dave) Yeazell and great grandmother of 21. Dear sister of the late Richard (Marion) Strait. Also survived by her nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
Helen loved the sunshine, being outdoors, gardening, and spending time at her cottage on Birch Lake in Michigan. She generously shared her cottage through four decades with family and friends. She loved to exercise, do yoga, and became a fitness walker winning many races in her age group and competing into her late 80’s. She was part of the park district’s walking club and continued walking several times a week into her 90’s. She was an active member and volunteer at Westwood United Methodist Church, My Neighbor’s Place and Food Pantry.
Helen loved sending cards and letters, reading, sewing, baking cookies, pies, and her famous caramel rolls and Swedish Tea rings. She was gifted with creativity and talent and enjoyed oil painting, drawing, calligraphy, and wood carving and was a member of Cincinnati Carvers Guild.
Although WWll ended before she could serve, Helen was in the Cadet Nurse Corps program earning her diploma as an RN from Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN. Nursing was a part of who she was and she loved caring for others, continuing to work until her retirement at age 77.
Helen had a spirit of independence and adventure but was happiest spending time with family and friends. She was known throughout her life for her sweet and kind nature and her quiet confidence and strength. She was always positive, never complained, and handled every life situation with prayers and with grace. She truly bloomed where she was planted, embracing where she was as a part of her path and walked faithfully forward.
“The Lord will take care of me. He always has. Nothing has been too much for me”…Helen’s own words reflected her strong faith that never wavered.
A special thank you to the staff of Bayley and Hospice of Cincinnati for their loving care of our Mom.
