With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joseph L. Schoenung, a deeply beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, dedicated civil engineer, and proud United States Army veteran. Joe was born in Cincinnati, OH on September 15, 1945, and he served his community as a Civil Engineer for the City of Cincinnati for an impressive 36 years. His service to his city was marked by excellence and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on the infrastructure of the community he loved. Having honorably served his country during the Vietnam War Era. His commitment to his fellow service members and to the principles of duty and honor was unwavering throughout his life. Joe found joy in simple pleasures like watching Bengals and Reds games, tending to his garden, solving puzzles, and exploring new destinations through travel. His warm and kind-hearted nature touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. A devout Catholic, Joseph found solace and strength in his faith, attending Mass daily at Little Flower Church. He drew comfort and inspiration from his spiritual beliefs, guiding his actions with compassion and kindness. Joe found joy in attending and cheering on his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at their various sporting events. His presence and encouragement will be deeply missed by his family. For Joe, family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with his beloved spouse, Janet (nee Ramsey) Schoenung and the late Cecilia (nee Haas) Schoenung. Devoted father of Sheila McAfee, Douglas Hicks, Daniel (Terra) Hicks, David (Michelle) Hicks and Denis (Karen) Hicks. Step-father of Melissa (Ron) Roe, Michael Gadd and Amanda (Jason) Betit. Loving grandfather of Christopher, Matthew, Amber, Luke, Tasha, Douglas, Kayla, Daniel, Kimberly, Tabitha, Kelsy, Tyler, Sarah, Toni, Stacy, Denis, Drew, Brett, Hunter, Mitch, Brandon, Lauren and Zachery. Great grandfather of 23 great grandchildren. Dear brother of Julie (Robert) Reece. Preceded in death by his granddaughter, Ashley, his parents Martin and Frances (nee Deters) Schoenung, his sisters, Sr. Ruth Schoenung, OSF, Sr. Frances Mary Schoenung, SND, Sr. Marguerite Schoenung, SND and his brothers, Stanley, Martin, Raymond, Hubert, John, Thomas and Jerome Schoenung. Brother-in-law of Sharon (Dan) Totten. Funeral services to honor the life and legacy of Joe will take place at the Frederick Funeral Home on August 19, 2024, with visitation from 4:00 pm- 7:00 pm. A Mass celebrating his life will be held at Little Flower Church on August 20, 2024, at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741. The memory of Joseph Leo Schoenung will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His passion for his work, unwavering dedication to his country, and profound love for his family will forever be remembered and cherished.
