Elizabeth Piatt Riede

september 27, 1941 – may 15, 2025

Elizabeth Julia Piatt Riede, beloved mother, grandmother, and spirited soul, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025, at the age of 83 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born on September 27, 1941, in Plains, Pennsylvania, Elizabeth’s journey through life was marked by love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to family and faith.

Elizabeth, known affectionately as “Betsy, ” to those who cherished her, embraced life with a heart full of love and a zest for adventure. After marrying her first love, Leroy Piatt, in 1962, she journeyed across New York and New Jersey before making Cincinnati her cherished home. There, she raised 2 children who were lucky to have the most loving, accepting, funny and strong mother for whom anyone could ask. A long time employee at McAlpins, Betsy also found joy in coaching youth sports and teaching religious education, nurturing young minds with her wisdom, kindness and unfaltering Catholic faith. She loved to read, and could devour a book in a single day. Traveling was another joy and she had many great adventures with her friends and family. An avid sports fan, Betsy would always cheer for her favorite teams, especially her  beloved Buckeyes. Besides her children and grandchildren, Betsy cherished animals, having rescued and loved many precious dogs. Her love story found a new chapter with Paul Riede, whom she married in 2005, embodying the belief that love is boundless and eternal.

Left to celebrate her legacy are her children, Mark Piatt and Rebecca Piatt Owen, along with their spouses, Tara Piatt and Neil Owen. She is adored by her grandchildren—Ellyn Piatt Malone, (Reid Malone), Cerys Elizabeth Owen, William Piatt, Jack Owen, Emma Catherine Owen, and Luke Piatt—who were the light of her life. Her stepdaughter, Kim Blades, and stepson-in-law, Charlie Blades, along with their son, CJ Blades, also hold her memory dear. Elizabeth is reunited in peace with her beloved Leroy and Paul.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Elizabeth can be made to an animal shelter of one’s choice.
