Typically, Memorial Day Weekend at Arlington fills our grounds with thousands of visitors visiting the graves where loved ones are laid to rest. In more recent years, the Field of Memories has provided additional patriotic symbolism and remembrance. As unlikely as it may seem and even in the midst of a pandemic, this year proved to be no different as hundreds upon hundreds of cars, trucks, vans, SUV’s and motorcycles passed through the gates bringing thousands of visitors to the grounds.
While the ritual of grave visitation was virtually the same this year as in the past, the contagiousness of the coronavirus required a different approach to the Field of Memories. We eliminated all individual tributes; however, the almost one thousand flags strong were nevertheless erected en masse so that our visitors could Honor, Remember and Celebrate the men and women of our armed forces who died defending our nation. Also in keeping with tradition, The Wesley Werner American Legion Post 513 held a private Flag Raising Ceremony and 21 gun salute in remembrance of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. And, courtesy of Arlington, American flags were handed out to visitors so they could raise the Stars & Stripes at the grave of a loved one.
As visitors entered the grounds, we handed out surveys as a means to gather critical performance information and as a way of thanking those who participated, we selected six winners. We appreciate everyone who took the time to complete our survey so we can better serve our families.
Congratulations to the following visitors who completed our survey and won a $100 Kroger gift card:
Patty H., Robbie C., Ted H., Janet C., John B. and Francis G.
Finally, maintenance/service requests submitted to us over Memorial Day Weekend are actively being addressed. If you submitted a maintenance request, we will notify you when the work is complete. We ask and encourage all visitors to make us aware of any concerns regarding a loved one’s final resting place. You may do so by calling our office at 513-521-7003 or emailing us at Contact Us
